Norlag attended the certificate award ceremony held in the Rustavi #16 penitentiary establishment for the first group of the inmates on English language and computer courses. The education house was launched in September 2011 and in frames of the vocational training process 60 inmates were able to participate. The trainings were delivered by the G. Tavartkiladze University.
Applying Supreme Court decisions in practice
On 29th November 2011, NORLAG and the Supreme Court of Georgia hosted a mini-conference with the title “Applying Supreme Court decisions in practice” in hotel Marriott Courtyard.
Keynote speaker, Supreme Court Chairman Konstantine Kublashvili, expressed gratitude for the improved accessibility of Supreme Court judgements, and strongly invited legal practitioners to use the database and to study court decisions. Other speakers where Ms. Nina Mår (NORLAG), Mr. Giorgi Meladze (Free university), Mr. Giorgi Giorgadze (NORLAG) and Mr. Lars Christian Sunde (Head of Mission, NORLAG).
Reintegration programs for Probationers-Davitiani
In October 2011 representatives of NORLAG Mr. Rune Fjeld and Ms. Moreta Bobokhidze together with the Deputy minister of Corrections and Legal assistance Mr. Giorgi Makasarashvili have visited Davitianni training center.
The project includes organization of education and special professional training programs. At the first stage, probationers will learn a foreign language and computer programs.
Approximately 300 probationers will be involved in the rehabilitations program at training center of Patriarchate`s movement “Davitianni”. Probation Bureau is now starting to put more rehabilitations program in place as an alternative to ordinary control work as the main activities for probation officers.
Norlag founded equipment for education activities and the aim of the project is self-realization of probationers and strengthen alternative sentencing.
Reform Work in Penitentiary Field
NORLAG exit plan is highlighting the need of improving skills for prison staff and increase the condition for the inmates. NORLAG is supporting the Georgian government in implementing the long-term goals listed in the new Code on Imprisonment which went into force in October 2010.
During the spring 2011, NORLAG has trained approximately 200 GBA lawyers in the following topics: oral presentation skills, European standards on use of pre-trial detention and other preventive measures. The focus has been the requirements in the European Convention on Human Rights article 5, and relevant case law.
